    NEXT MEETING

The next meeting of the Nova Scotia Mineral and Gem Society will be held Saturday, October 25, 7:30-10:00 p.m. in the auditorium of the N.S. Museum of Natural History. After the business meeting, Ronnie Van Dommelen will give a presentation on Copper at Cape D’Or. His description of the talk is below. The mineral theme for the evening will be copper and other ore minerals.

Copper at Cape D’Or, Nova Scotia

The Colonial Copper Company mined native copper from the basalt cliffs of Cape D’Or for about a decade, beginning in 1897. Their extensive efforts included a railway, a large concentrating plant, and workings that reached out under the Bay of Fundy. They left a number of excellent historical photos that nicely document the operations at that time. Recently, beautiful crystallized specimens of native copper have been found, along with excellent zeolites. This talk will explore the history of the mine and the beautiful minerals found there.

    PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Welcome back to the club after the summer collecting season. Our first meeting of the season was an informal one at which we showed off finds from the summer ands traded exciting collecting stories. Several guests attended who expressed interest in the club.

Our next two meetings promise to be great ones, with speakers planned for each night. This month will be Ronnie Van Dommelen (see below for details) and next month we’ll have Tim Fedak of the Fundy Geological Museum. More information about the latter will be posted next month.

    HARRY CROSMAN

We are sad to report that one of our oldest and steadfast members, Harry Crosman, passed away at the end of August. Harry was instrumental in introducing many individuals to the world of mineral collecting and lapidary. His other hobby was photography, and he was also a member of the Photography Guild. You could always count on Harry to provide interesting, enjoyable slide show presentations of the various mineral and gem shows he visited. The annual Tucson show was always a favourite. As if 'rockhounding' and photography weren't enough, Harry was also long time, active member of the Shriner's organization. Good-bye old friend, you will be truly missed.
